DESCRIPTION
A patty melt is a classic American grilled sandwich made with a juicy ground beef patty, melted cheese, and sweet caramelized onions. It is grilled between buttery toasted bread (usually rye or sourdough) until golden and crispy, creating a rich, savory, and comforting sandwich experience.
INGREDIENTS
- 500g ground beef
- 6 slices rye bread or sourdough
- 6 slices cheese (cheddar, Swiss, or American)
- 2 large onions (thinly sliced)
- 2–3 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp oil
- Salt to taste
- Black pepper to taste
- Optional: Worcestershire sauce (1 tsp)
INSTRUCTIONS
- Heat oil in a pan and cook sliced onions on low heat until golden brown and caramelized (15–20 minutes). Set aside.
- Season ground beef with salt and pepper, then shape into thin patties.
- Cook patties in a hot pan for 3–4 minutes per side until fully cooked.
- Butter one side of each bread slice.
- Assemble sandwich: bread (buttered side out), cheese, beef patty, caramelized onions, more cheese, then top bread slice.
- Grill sandwich on a pan or skillet until golden brown and cheese is melted, pressing slightly.
- Slice and serve hot.
