Patty Melt (Classic American Grilled Sandwich)

DESCRIPTION

A patty melt is a classic American grilled sandwich made with a juicy ground beef patty, melted cheese, and sweet caramelized onions. It is grilled between buttery toasted bread (usually rye or sourdough) until golden and crispy, creating a rich, savory, and comforting sandwich experience.

INGREDIENTS

  • 500g ground beef
  • 6 slices rye bread or sourdough
  • 6 slices cheese (cheddar, Swiss, or American)
  • 2 large onions (thinly sliced)
  • 2–3 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste
  • Optional: Worcestershire sauce (1 tsp)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Heat oil in a pan and cook sliced onions on low heat until golden brown and caramelized (15–20 minutes). Set aside.
  2. Season ground beef with salt and pepper, then shape into thin patties.
  3. Cook patties in a hot pan for 3–4 minutes per side until fully cooked.
  4. Butter one side of each bread slice.
  5. Assemble sandwich: bread (buttered side out), cheese, beef patty, caramelized onions, more cheese, then top bread slice.
  6. Grill sandwich on a pan or skillet until golden brown and cheese is melted, pressing slightly.
  7. Slice and serve hot.

TIPS

  • Cook onions slowly for best sweetness and flavor.
  • Use thin patties so the sandwich stays easy to bite.
  • Mix cheeses (Swiss + cheddar) for richer taste.
  • Press lightly while grilling for crisp texture.
  • Serve immediately for best melted cheese experience.
