Old Fashioned Salisbury Steak recipe

INGREDIENTS

For the Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 preferred)
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt & black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon oil or butter (for frying)

For the Gravy:

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Salt & pepper to taste

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Make the Steaks:
    • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Mix until just combined. Shape into 4 oval patties.
  2. Brown the Patties:
    • Heat oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat.
    • Cook the patties for about 4–5 minutes per side, or until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the Onion Gravy:
    • In the same skillet, add butter and sliced onions. Sauté until soft and golden brown (about 5–7 minutes).
    • Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute to remove raw flour taste.
    • Gradually whisk in beef broth, then add ketchup and Worcestershire sauce.
    • Bring to a simmer and cook until slightly thickened (about 3–4 minutes).
  4. Combine and Simmer:
    • Return the browned patties to the skillet.
    • Spoon some gravy over the top and cover.
    • Simmer on low for 15–20 minutes, or until patties are cooked through.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or over rice—don’t forget to drizzle plenty of that rich gravy on top!
