Old Fashioned Salisbury Steak recipe

Ingredients

For the patties:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

For the gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until just combined. Don’t overmix.
  2. Shape the mixture into 4 oval patties.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add a bit of oil if needed, and sear the patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium. Melt butter and sauté sliced onions until soft and golden, about 5–7 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle in the flour and stir constantly for about 1 minute to cook the raw taste out.
  6. Slowly pour in the beef broth, whisking to prevent lumps. Add ketchup and Dijon mustard (if using). Simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes.
  7. Return the patties to the skillet, cover, and simmer on low for 15–20 minutes, until the meat is cooked through and flavors meld.
  8. Serve hot with mashed potatoes or over egg noodles, topped generously with the onion gravy.
