Ingredients
For the patties:
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
For the gravy:
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix together ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until just combined. Don’t overmix.
- Shape the mixture into 4 oval patties.
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add a bit of oil if needed, and sear the patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium. Melt butter and sauté sliced onions until soft and golden, about 5–7 minutes.
- Sprinkle in the flour and stir constantly for about 1 minute to cook the raw taste out.
- Slowly pour in the beef broth, whisking to prevent lumps. Add ketchup and Dijon mustard (if using). Simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes.
- Return the patties to the skillet, cover, and simmer on low for 15–20 minutes, until the meat is cooked through and flavors meld.
- Serve hot with mashed potatoes or over egg noodles, topped generously with the onion gravy.
