Ingredients
- 12 mozzarella string cheese sticks (or block mozzarella cut into 1-inch cubes)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1½ cups Italian-style breadcrumbs (or plain + 1 tsp Italian seasoning)
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for extra flavor)
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- Marinara or ranch sauce, for dipping (optional)
Instructions
1. Prepare Cheese:
- Cut mozzarella sticks into bite-sized pieces (about 1-inch long).
- Place in the freezer for 20–30 minutes to firm up (this helps prevent cheese from oozing during frying).
2. Set Up Breading Station:
- Bowl 1: Place the flour.
- Bowl 2: Whisk together the eggs and milk.
- Bowl 3: Combine breadcrumbs and Parmesan (if using).
3. Bread the Cheese:
- Dip each mozzarella piece into flour, then egg mixture, then breadcrumb mixture.
- For extra crispiness, repeat the egg and breadcrumb steps (double coating).
4. Freeze Again:
- Place breaded cheese bites on a tray and freeze for another 30 minutes before frying. This helps them hold shape and prevents melting too quickly.
5. Fry:
- Heat about 2 inches of oil in a deep pan or skillet to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry a few bites at a time until golden brown, about 1–2 minutes. Do not overcrowd.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
6. Serve:
- Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce like marinara, ranch, or garlic aioli.
