Long John Silver’s Batter – Don’t Lose This Recipe

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder (optional, for flavor)
  • Vegetable oil (for deep frying)
  • Fish fillets or chicken strips (your choice for dipping)

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil: Preheat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large heavy pot to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, combine flour, cornstarch, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and onion powder (if using).
  3. Add water: Gradually whisk in cold water until the batter is smooth. The batter should be slightly thick but not too runny.
  4. Dip and coat: Pat your fish or chicken dry with paper towels, then dip into the batter to coat evenly.
  5. Fry to golden perfection: Carefully place the coated fish or chicken into the hot oil. Fry in batches for 3–4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Drain and serve: Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Serve hot with tartar sauce or your favorite dip.
