These buttery, flaky biscuits are incredibly easy to make. The “swim” in butter before baking creates a wonderfully rich and tender texture.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, melted
Instructions:
- Preheat and Prepare:
- Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C).
- Pour the melted butter into a 9-inch square baking dish or a 9-inch cast-iron skillet.
- Combine Dry Ingredients:
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda.
- Add Buttermilk:
- Pour the buttermilk into the dry ingredients and stir just until a soft dough forms. Do not overmix. The dough will be sticky.
- Transfer to Buttered Dish:
- Gently drop spoonfuls of the dough into the melted butter in the baking dish. The biscuits don’t have to be perfectly shaped; rustic is fine. You can create 8-10 biscuits.
- Let Butter Soak:
- Allow the biscuits to sit in the melted butter for a minute or two, so the bottoms can absorb the butter.
- Bake:
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown on top and cooked through.
- Serve:
- Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Serve warm.
Tips and Variations:
- For extra flaky biscuits: Handle the dough as little as possible.
- Herbs: Add dried herbs like thyme, rosemary, or chives to the dry ingredients for a savory twist.
- Cheese: Sprinkle shredded cheddar or other cheese over the biscuits before baking.
- Honey Butter: Serve with honey butter for a sweet and savory treat.
- Storage: store leftover biscuits in an airtight container at room temperature.
