Tender baked apples wrapped in a flaky pastry and swimming in a sweet, cinnamon-spiced sauce. This is a classic comfort dessert, perfect for a cozy evening.
Ingredients:
- 6 medium apples (such as Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji), peeled, cored, and quartered or sliced thickly
- 1 package (14.1 ounces) refrigerated pie crusts (or homemade equivalent)
- 21 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
- 21 cup granulated sugar
- 41 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 41 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
- 41 cup water or apple cider
- Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Roll out each pie crust slightly on a lightly floured surface. Cut each crust into 6-8 squares, depending on the size you want your dumplings to be.
- Place a piece of apple on each square of dough. Bring the corners of the dough up and over the apple, pinching the seams to seal. You can also simply fold the dough over the apple slices.
- Arrange the wrapped apple dumplings in the prepared baking dish.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Pour this mixture evenly over the apple dumplings.
- Pour the water or apple cider into the bottom of the baking dish.
- Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the apples are tender.
- Let the dumplings cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar, if desired. Serve warm, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of cream.
