White Bread

A classic homemade white bread recipe that is soft, fluffy, and perfect for sandwiches, toast, or just enjoying warm with butter. Simple to make and incredibly versatile, this bread will become a staple in your kitchen.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted (plus extra for greasing)
  • ½ cup milk (optional for softer texture)

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast:
  • In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, until it becomes frothy.
  1. Mix the Dough:
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the frothy yeast mixture and melted butter. Stir until the dough starts to come together.
  1. Knead the Dough:
  • Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is sticky, gradually add a little more flour.
  1. First Rise:
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1 ½ hours, or until it doubles in size.
  1. Shape the Dough:
  • Once risen, punch down the dough to release any air bubbles. Shape it into a loaf and place it in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  1. Second Rise:
  • Cover the loaf with a cloth and let it rise again for 30-45 minutes, or until it has risen about 1 inch above the rim of the loaf pan.
  1. Bake:
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
  1. Cool:
  • Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 5-10 minutes. Then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Enjoy your freshly baked white bread! It’s perfect for sandwiches, French toast, or simply slathered with butter.
