Überbackenes Sandwich

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of rustic bread (sourdough or rye work well)
  • 4 slices of ham or cooked bacon
  • 4 slices of tomato
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (Emmental, Gruyère, or cheddar)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Chives or parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Toast the bread slices lightly, either in a toaster or on a skillet with a bit of butter.
  3. Place the toasted bread on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  4. Top each slice with a piece of ham or cooked bacon.
  5. Add a slice of tomato on top of the ham.
  6. Crack an egg over each sandwich (you can make a shallow dip in the toppings to hold the egg in place).
  7. Sprinkle generously with shredded cheese.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for about 10–12 minutes, or until the egg whites are set and the cheese is melted and golden.
  9. Season with salt and pepper, garnish with chopped chives or parsley, and serve hot.
