Ingredients
For the Cake:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 cup whole milk
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot coffee (or hot water)
For the Chocolate Ganache:
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 8 oz dark chocolate, chopped
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter
For the Chocolate Frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 ½ cups powdered sugar
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- ¼ cup heavy cream
Instructions
- Preheat Oven & Prep Pans – Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- Make the Cake Batter – In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Mix Wet Ingredients – Add milk, oil, eggs, and vanilla. Mix until combined. Gradually add hot coffee, mixing until smooth.
- Bake – Divide batter evenly between prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Prepare Ganache – Heat heavy cream until steaming, then pour over chopped chocolate. Let sit for 2 minutes, then stir until smooth. Add butter and mix until glossy. Let cool slightly.
- Make the Frosting – Beat butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and salt. Mix in vanilla and heavy cream until smooth and fluffy.
- Assemble the Cake – Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting, then place the second cake layer on top.
- Frost & Decorate – Spread remaining frosting over the cake. Pour cooled ganache over the top, letting it drip down the sides.
