Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1/2 lb (225 g) ground pork
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ground allspice
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

For the Creamy Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Meatballs:
    • In a large bowl, combine breadcrumbs and milk; let sit for 5 minutes.
    • Add ground beef, ground pork, egg, onion, nutmeg, allspice, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
    • Roll the mixture into 1-inch meatballs and set aside.
  2. Cook the Meatballs:
    • Heat a large skillet over medium heat with a drizzle of oil.
    • Fry the meatballs in batches until browned on all sides. Transfer to a plate and cover with foil.
  3. Make the Gravy:
    • In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes until golden.
    • Gradually whisk in the beef broth, ensuring no lumps.
    • Add the cream and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer for 5–7 minutes until thickened.
  4. Combine:
    • Return the meatballs to the skillet and simmer in the gravy for 10 minutes, or until fully cooked.
  5. Serve:
    • Pair with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or lingonberry jam for an authentic Swedish touch.
