These hearty and flavorful stuffed cabbage rolls are a classic comfort food dish. The tender cabbage leaves are filled with a savory mixture of ground meat, rice, and vegetables, then simmered in a rich tomato sauce.
Ingredients:
- 1 large head of green cabbage
- 1 pound ground beef or pork
- 1 cup long-grain rice
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 bay leaf
Instructions:
- Prepare the cabbage: Remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and discard. Place the cabbage in a large pot of boiling water and cook for 3-5 minutes, or until the leaves are slightly softened. Remove the leaves from the pot and set aside to cool.
- Make the filling: In a large bowl, combine the ground meat, rice, onion, garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, oregano, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine.
- Assemble the rolls: Place a large spoonful of the filling onto each cabbage leaf. Roll up the leaf tightly, tucking in the sides.
- Make the sauce: In a large pot, combine the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, beef broth, and bay leaf. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes.
- Simmer the rolls: Place the stuffed cabbage rolls in the pot with the sauce. Cover and simmer for 1-1.5 hours, or until the rolls are tender and the sauce has thickened.
- Serve: Remove the rolls from the pot and serve hot with the sauce. Enjoy!
