Stop Buying Celery at the Store — Grow a Never-Ending Supply at Home in a Pot (with Bonus Coriander Tip!)

Ingredients/Supplies

  • 1 fresh celery bunch (store-bought with base intact)
  • 1 medium pot (6–8 inches deep)
  • Potting soil (rich, well-draining)
  • A shallow bowl or jar
  • Water
  • Sunny spot (windowsill or balcony)
  • Optional: coriander (cilantro) seeds

Instructions

1. Prepare the Celery Base:
Cut off the base (bottom 2 inches) of your celery bunch. Use the stalks for cooking.

2. Root the Base:
Place the celery base, cut side up, in a shallow bowl of water. Put it in a sunny spot. Change the water every 1–2 days.

3. Wait for Growth:
In about 5–7 days, new leaves will sprout from the center and tiny roots will appear at the bottom.

4. Pot the Celery:
Fill your pot with potting soil. Make a hole and plant the rooted base about halfway deep, leaving the new shoots above soil level. Gently press the soil around it and water well.

5. Care for Your Celery:
Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Place the pot in a sunny spot (6+ hours of sunlight daily).

6. Harvest:
In a few weeks, new stalks will grow. Cut what you need from the outside stalks and let the inner stalks keep growing — this gives you a continuous supply!

Bonus: Grow Coriander at Home Too!

  • Sprinkle coriander (cilantro) seeds in a pot with soil.
  • Lightly cover with soil, water gently, and keep in a sunny spot.
  • Keep soil moist. In about 3 weeks, you’ll have fresh coriander leaves!
