Southern StrawberrySweet Tea Recipe

Southern Strawberry Sweet Tea is a refreshing twist on the classic Southern beverage, perfect for hot summer afternoons, family gatherings, or just relaxing on the porch. With the sweetness of ripe strawberries and the bold flavor of brewed black tea, this drink is both soothing and fruity. Unlike regular sweet tea, this version includes a fresh strawberry syrup that adds natural sweetness, a touch of tartness, and a gorgeous rosy hue. It’s easy to make, requires only a handful of ingredients, and can be served over ice or stored in the fridge for later. Whether you’re from the South or just love Southern flavors, this tea brings comfort and charm with every sip.

Ingredients

4 cups water (for boiling)
3–4 black tea bags (depending on desired strength)
1 pound fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
1 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon lemon juice (optional)
2 more cups cold water (for dilution)
Ice cubes, for serving
Fresh mint leaves or sliced strawberries for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Bring 4 cups of water to a gentle boil in a medium saucepan

Once boiling, remove from heat and steep the black tea bags for 5 to 7 minutes depending on how strong you like your tea

While the tea is steeping, prepare the strawberry syrup by combining sliced strawberries and sugar in another saucepan over medium heat

Cook the strawberries, stirring occasionally, until they release juices and the mixture becomes syrupy, about 10 to 12 minutes

Use a fine mesh strainer to separate the syrup from the strawberry solids, pressing gently to extract as much liquid as possible

Discard the strawberry solids or save them for a dessert topping

Add the strawberry syrup to a large pitcher

Pour the brewed tea into the same pitcher and stir well to combine

Add 2 cups of cold water to dilute the mixture to your desired strength and sweetness

Taste and adjust by adding a splash of lemon juice if you prefer a slight tang or a more refreshing flavor

Refrigerate the tea until thoroughly chilled, about 1 to 2 hours

Serve over ice in tall glasses

Garnish with mint leaves or strawberry slices for a decorative touch if desired
