Smothered Hamburger Steak

Ingredients

For the steaks:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1–2 tbsp oil (for frying)

For the gravy:

  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Make the Steaks:
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, chopped onion, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix until just combined (don’t overmix).
    Shape into 4 oval patties.
  2. Brown the Steaks:
Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sear the patties on both sides until browned (about 4 minutes per side). Remove and set aside.
  3. Make the Gravy:
In the same skillet, melt butter. Add sliced onions (and mushrooms, if using). Sauté until soft and golden, about 8–10 minutes.
Stir in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes to form a roux.
Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer and let it thicken slightly.
  4. Smother the Steaks:
Return the patties to the skillet. Spoon gravy over them, cover, and let simmer on low for 15–20 minutes, until the patties are cooked through and the gravy is rich.
  5. Serve:
Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
