Ingredients
For the steaks:
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1–2 tbsp oil (for frying)
For the gravy:
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Make the Steaks:
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, chopped onion, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix until just combined (don’t overmix).
Shape into 4 oval patties. - Brown the Steaks:
Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sear the patties on both sides until browned (about 4 minutes per side). Remove and set aside. - Make the Gravy:
In the same skillet, melt butter. Add sliced onions (and mushrooms, if using). Sauté until soft and golden, about 8–10 minutes.
Stir in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes to form a roux.
Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer and let it thicken slightly. - Smother the Steaks:
Return the patties to the skillet. Spoon gravy over them, cover, and let simmer on low for 15–20 minutes, until the patties are cooked through and the gravy is rich. - Serve:
Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
