Savory Salisbury Steak Recipe

This classic dish features flavorful ground beef patties pan-fried to perfection and served with a rich mushroom gravy.

Ingredients:

  • For the Steaks:
    • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio)
    • 1/4 cup bread crumbs
    • 1/4 cup milk
    • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
    • 1 egg
  • For the Gravy:
    • 2 tablespoons butter
    • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 1 cup beef broth
    • 1/2 cup chopped mushrooms
    • 1/4 cup chopped onion
    • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
    • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Steaks: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, milk, onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and egg. Mix gently until just combined; overmixing will make the patties tough.
  2. Shape the Steaks: Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a flat, round patty about 1 inch thick.
  3. Cook the Steaks: Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the cooked patties to a plate and keep warm.
  4. Make the Gravy: Melt butter in the same skillet. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Gradually whisk in beef broth, stirring constantly until the gravy thickens.
  5. Add Veggies: Add mushrooms and onion to the gravy and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender. Stir in thyme, salt, and pepper to taste.
  6. Serve: Return the cooked patties to the skillet with the gravy. Simmer for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite side dish.

Tips & Variations:

  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of dried rosemary or oregano to the steak mixture.
  • To make the gravy richer, stir in a tablespoon of Dijon mustard.
  • Serve with a side of steamed broccoli or green beans for a complete meal.
  • You can also bake the Salisbury steaks in the oven at 375°F for 20-25 minutes.
