Sausage Crescent Rolls Casserole Recipe

This easy and comforting casserole features savory sausage, melted cheese, and flaky crescent rolls baked together into a golden-brown, bubbly dish. It’s perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a casual dinner.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage (bulk or removed from casings)
  • 2 (8 ounce) cans crescent roll dough
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or a blend of cheddar and Monterey Jack)
  • 1/2 cup milk (or heavy cream)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon dried mustard powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • Optional: Chopped green onions or parsley for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Preheat & Prepare: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the Sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Prepare the Egg Mixture: In a medium bowl, whisk together the milk (or cream), eggs, dried mustard powder, garlic powder, black pepper, and salt.
  4. Assemble the Casserole:
    • Unroll the crescent roll dough and separate it into triangles.
    • Line the bottom of the prepared baking dish with half of the crescent roll triangles, pressing the seams together to form a crust.
    • Sprinkle half of the shredded cheese over the crescent roll crust.
    • Spread the cooked sausage evenly over the cheese layer.
    • Pour the egg mixture over the sausage layer.
    • Sprinkle the remaining shredded cheese over the egg mixture.
    • Arrange the remaining crescent roll triangles over the cheese layer, pressing the seams together to form a top crust.
  5. Bake: Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the crescent rolls are golden brown and the filling is set.
  6. Cool & Serve: Let the casserole cool slightly before cutting it into squares. Garnish with chopped green onions or parsley, if desired. Serve warm.

Tips and Notes:

  • Sausage Variations: You can use different types of sausage, such as Italian sausage or turkey sausage, for variety.
  • Cheese Variations: Feel free to use other cheeses like pepper jack, Swiss, or Gruyère.
  • Vegetable Add-ins: You can add chopped vegetables like bell peppers, onions, or mushrooms to the sausage mixture for added flavor and nutrition.
  • Make Ahead: You can assemble the casserole ahead of time and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours before baking. Add a few extra minutes to the baking time if baking from cold.
  • Customize: Add a layer of hash browns to the bottom for a heartier casserole.
  • Spice It Up: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce to the sausage mixture for a spicy kick.
