Deliciously soft and fluffy bread rolls with a slightly nutty crunch from poppy seeds. Perfect as a side for soups, salads, or enjoyed on their own with a pat of butter.
Ingredients
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ¼ tsp salt
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 2 ¼ tsp (1 packet) instant yeast
- 1 cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
- ¼ cup warm water
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- ¼ cup poppy seeds
Instructions
- Activate the Yeast:
In a small bowl, combine the warm water, 1 teaspoon of sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy. - Prepare the Dough:
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and remaining sugar. Add the activated yeast mixture, warm milk, melted butter, and the egg. Mix until a soft dough forms. - Knead:
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-7 minutes. - First Rise:
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours or until doubled in size. - Shape the Rolls:
Punch down the dough and divide it into 12-15 equal portions. Shape each portion into a smooth ball and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover and let rise again for 30-45 minutes. - Preheat Oven:
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). - Add Poppy Seeds:
Brush the rolls with an egg wash (1 egg whisked with 1 tbsp water) and sprinkle generously with poppy seeds. - Bake:
Bake the rolls for 18-22 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool slightly on a wire rack.
Serve warm or at room temperature and enjoy!
