A hearty and comforting casserole that combines the flavors of a classic cheeseburger into a flaky, cheesy pie. Perfect for a family dinner!
Ingredients:
- Crust:
- 1 box (14.1 ounces) refrigerated pie crusts (2 crusts)
- Filling:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon dried mustard
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce.
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or a blend of cheddar and Monterey Jack)
- Optional: Pickles, sliced.
- Topping:
- Optional: sesame seeds.
Instructions:
- Prepare the Crust:
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Unroll one pie crust and place it in a 9-inch pie plate.
- Trim and crimp the edges.
- Optional: place the pie plate into the fridge while you prepare the filling.
- Cook the Beef:
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and onion over medium heat, breaking up the beef with a spoon, until the beef is browned and the onion is softened.
- Drain off any excess grease.
- Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and dried mustard.
- Add Sauces:
- Stir in the ketchup, yellow mustard, and Worcestershire sauce.
- Cook for a few more minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
- Assemble the Pie:
- Pour the ground beef mixture into the prepared pie crust.
- Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the beef.
- Optional: add a layer of pickle slices.
- Unroll the second pie crust and place it over the cheese layer.
- Trim and crimp the edges to seal. Cut a few slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
- Optional: brush the top crust with an egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water) and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
- Bake:
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
- Let the pie cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
Tips and Variations:
- For a spicier kick, add a dash of hot sauce or a pinch of red pepper flakes to the beef mixture.
- You can use different types of cheese, such as pepper jack or Colby jack.
- Add other burger toppings, such as diced tomatoes or lettuce, after baking.
- For a different crust, you can use a homemade pie crust recipe, or a crescent roll dough.
- Serve with your favorite burger condiments.
- For a lower carb option, you can make the recipe without the bottom crust.
