Philly Cheesesteak Egg Rolls Recipe

These crispy and flavorful egg rolls are filled with the classic ingredients of a Philly cheesesteak: thinly sliced steak, sautéed onions, and melted cheese. They’re a fun and unique appetizer or snack that’s perfect for parties or game day.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound thinly sliced ribeye steak (or sirloin)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 8 ounces provolone cheese, sliced (or mozzarella or white American cheese)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 12 egg roll wrappers
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Optional: Green bell pepper, thinly sliced

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Filling:
    • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Add the thinly sliced steak and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, until browned but still slightly pink in the center.
    • Remove the steak from the skillet and set aside.
    • Add the thinly sliced onion to the skillet and cook for 5-7 minutes, until softened and slightly caramelized.
    • Add the minced garlic (and bell pepper, if using) and cook for another minute until fragrant.
    • Return the cooked steak to the skillet.
    • Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
    • Reduce heat to low and simmer for a few minutes until the flavors meld.
    • Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  2. Assemble the Egg Rolls:
    • Lay an egg roll wrapper on a clean surface with a corner facing you.
    • Place a slice of provolone cheese in the center of the wrapper.
    • Top with about 1/4 cup of the steak and onion filling.
    • Fold the corner closest to you over the filling.
    • Fold in the sides of the wrapper.
    • Roll the wrapper up tightly like a cigar, sealing the edge with a little water.
    • Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling.
  3. Fry the Egg Rolls:
    • Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat (350°F / 175°C).
    • Carefully add the egg rolls to the hot oil, a few at a time, and fry for 2-3 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy.
    • Remove the egg rolls from the oil and drain on paper towels.
  4. Serve:
    • Serve the Philly cheesesteak egg rolls immediately with your favorite dipping sauces, such as ketchup, mustard, or a creamy cheese sauce.

Tips and Notes:

  • Steak Preparation: For the best results, use thinly sliced ribeye steak. You can ask your butcher to slice it for you.
  • Cheese Variations: You can use other types of cheese, such as mozzarella or white American cheese.
  • Vegetable Variations: You can add other vegetables to the filling, such as mushrooms or jalapeños.
  • Make Ahead: You can prepare the filling ahead of time and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours before assembling the egg rolls.
  • Baking Option: For a healthier option, you can bake the egg rolls instead of frying them. Brush them with olive oil and bake at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
