Ingredients:
For the Patty Melt:
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 slices of rye or sourdough bread
- 4 slices of Swiss cheese
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter (for toasting the bread)
For the Secret Sauce:
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Prepare the Secret Sauce:
- In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, Dijon mustard, pickle relish, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well and set aside.
- Cook the Onions:
- In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized and golden brown (about 10-15 minutes). Remove from heat and set aside.
- Shape and Cook the Patties:
- Form the ground beef into 4 equal patties. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
- In the same skillet over medium-high heat, add a little oil if needed, and cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness. Top each patty with a slice of Swiss cheese during the last minute of cooking to melt.
- Assemble the Patty Melts:
- Spread a generous amount of secret sauce on one side of each slice of bread.
- On the un-sauced side, layer a patty with melted cheese, followed by a portion of the caramelized onions. Top with another slice of bread, sauce side down.
- Toast the Sandwiches:
- In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of butter. Once melted, add the sandwiches. Cook on medium heat for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy.
- Serve:
- Slice the patty melts in half, serve warm with extra secret sauce on the side for dipping. Enjoy your hearty and flavorful Patty Melt!
