Pastry Horns Recipe

Ingredients:

For the Pastry:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 cup ice water

For the Filling:

  • 1 cup grated cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup chopped ham
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For the Egg Wash:

  • 1 large egg, beaten

Instructions:

Make the Pastry:

  1. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
  2. Cut in Butter: Add the cold butter cubes to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Add Water: Gradually add the ice water, tossing the mixture with a fork until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overwork the dough.
  4. Form Dough: Divide the dough into two equal portions. Shape each portion into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 30 minutes.

Prepare the Filling:

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a bowl, combine the cheddar cheese, ham, green onions, and black pepper.

Assemble and Bake:

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Roll Out Dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disk of dough to a 1/8-inch thickness.
  3. Cut Triangles: Cut the dough into triangles, about 4 inches wide at the base.
  4. Add Filling: Place a spoonful of the filling at the wide end of each triangle.
  5. Roll Up: Roll up the triangles, starting from the wide end, to form horns.
  6. Place on Baking Sheet: Place the horns on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  7. Brush with Egg Wash: Brush the tops of the horns with the beaten egg.
  8. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  9. Cool and Serve: Let the horns cool slightly on the baking sheet before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Tips:

  • For a richer flavor, use a combination of cheeses, such as cheddar and Gruyère.
  • Experiment with different fillings, such as spinach and feta, or caramelized onions and goat cheese.
  • To make mini pastry horns, cut the dough into smaller triangles.
  • For a flaky crust, be sure to keep the butter cold throughout the process.

Enjoy these crispy, golden pastry horns with your favorite dipping sauce, such as marinara sauce or a creamy cheese sauce.
