Orange Scones

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (plus extra for brushing)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Zest of 1 large orange
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice

For the Glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Cut in butter: Add cold cubed butter and use a pastry cutter or fingers to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Add wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together heavy cream, egg, vanilla extract, orange zest, and juice. Pour into the dry mixture and stir until just combined.
  5. Form dough: Transfer dough onto a floured surface, gently knead a few times, and shape into a round disc (about 1-inch thick). Cut into 8 wedges.
  6. Bake: Place scones on the prepared baking sheet, brush tops with heavy cream, and bake for 15-18 minutes or until golden brown.
  7. Prepare glaze: Whisk together powdered sugar, orange juice, and zest. Drizzle over warm scones.
  8. Serve & enjoy! Let scones cool slightly before serving.
