Orange Custard

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, warm the milk until it’s hot but not boiling. Set aside.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, sugar, cornstarch, and salt until smooth and pale.
  3. Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to avoid curdling.
  4. Pour the mixture back into the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until it thickens (about 5–7 minutes).
  5. Remove from heat and stir in the orange juice, orange zest, and vanilla extract.
  6. Strain the custard through a fine mesh sieve to ensure a smooth texture.
  7. Pour into serving dishes and let cool. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.
  8. Garnish with a slice of orange or mint before serving if desired.
