Ingredients
- 2 cups whole milk
- 3 large egg yolks
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1/2 cup fresh orange juice
- 1 tablespoon orange zest
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt
Instructions
- In a saucepan over medium heat, warm the milk until it’s hot but not boiling. Set aside.
- In a bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, sugar, cornstarch, and salt until smooth and pale.
- Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to avoid curdling.
- Pour the mixture back into the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until it thickens (about 5–7 minutes).
- Remove from heat and stir in the orange juice, orange zest, and vanilla extract.
- Strain the custard through a fine mesh sieve to ensure a smooth texture.
- Pour into serving dishes and let cool. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.
- Garnish with a slice of orange or mint before serving if desired.
