Orange cake

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup fresh orange juice
  • 2 tablespoons orange zest
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup plain yogurt or sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Optional Glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2–3 tablespoons orange juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8-inch round or square cake pan.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. Cream butter and sugar: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs and flavor: Beat in eggs one at a time, then add orange zest and vanilla extract.
  5. Incorporate liquids: Mix in the orange juice and yogurt (or sour cream) until well combined.
  6. Combine with dry ingredients: Gradually add the dry mixture into the wet ingredients, stirring just until combined.
  7. Bake: Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Cool: Let the cake cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Optional glaze: If using, whisk powdered sugar and orange juice together to form a glaze. Drizzle over the cooled cake.
