Ingredients
For the Cake:
- 1 box German chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients listed on box)
- 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 jar (12 oz) caramel sauce or topping
- ½ cup unsalted butter (melted)
- 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
- 1 cup chopped pecans
For Topping:
- Extra caramel sauce for drizzling
- Whipped cream or Cool Whip (optional)
- Extra pecans and chocolate chips (optional garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Prepare the German chocolate cake mix according to the package instructions. Pour half the batter into the prepared dish and bake for 15 minutes.
- While it bakes, mix together the caramel sauce and melted butter in a bowl.
- After 15 minutes, remove the cake from the oven. Pour the caramel mixture evenly over the warm cake.
- Sprinkle the chocolate chips and chopped pecans over the caramel layer.
- Gently spoon the remaining cake batter on top to cover the filling.
- Return the cake to the oven and bake for an additional 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool slightly before serving.
- Drizzle with extra caramel sauce and top with whipped cream, pecans, or chocolate chips if desired.
