Ingredients
- 12 mozzarella cheese sticks (string cheese)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 2 cups Italian-style breadcrumbs (or plain + 1 tsp Italian seasoning)
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for extra flavor)
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- Marinara sauce or ranch, for dipping
Instructions
1. Prepare the cheese:
– Cut each mozzarella stick into 2–3 bite-sized pieces.
– Place them in the freezer for at least 30 minutes to firm up. This helps prevent melting too quickly when frying.
2. Set up the breading stations:
– In one bowl: add flour.
– In a second bowl: whisk eggs and milk together.
– In a third bowl: mix breadcrumbs, Parmesan (if using), garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
3. Bread the cheese bites:
– Dredge each frozen cheese bite in flour.
– Then dip into the egg mixture.
– Finally, coat thoroughly with the breadcrumb mixture.
– (Optional but recommended) Repeat egg and breadcrumb steps for a thicker crust.
4. Freeze again:
– Place the breaded bites on a parchment-lined tray and freeze for another 30 minutes. This ensures they stay intact during frying.
5. Fry:
– Heat about 2 inches of oil in a deep pan or skillet to 350°F (175°C).
– Fry the bites in batches for about 1–2 minutes or until golden brown.
– Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
6. Serve:
– Serve hot with warm marinara sauce or your favorite dip.
