For the pastry (choux dough):
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 4 large eggs
For the cream filling:
- 2 cups heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar (or to taste)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Optional topping:
- Powdered sugar for dusting
- Melted chocolate for drizzling
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Make the choux pastry:
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine water, butter, and salt. Bring to a boil.
- Once boiling, quickly stir in the flour all at once. Stir vigorously until the mixture forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan.
- Remove from heat and let it cool for 5–10 minutes.
- Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition until the dough is smooth and glossy.
- Shape and bake:
- Drop spoonfuls of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes or until puffed and golden brown. Do not open the oven door during baking.
- Remove from oven and let cool completely.
- Make the whipped cream filling:
- In a mixing bowl, beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla until stiff peaks form.
- Assemble the cream puffs:
- Slice each cooled puff in half.
- Fill the bottom half with a generous dollop of whipped cream.
- Replace the top half like a sandwich.
- Finishing touches:
- Dust with powdered sugar and drizzle with melted chocolate if desired.
