Moist & Fluffy Chocolate Cake Recipe

This recipe yields a rich, decadent chocolate cake with a light and airy texture. It’s perfect for birthdays, celebrations, or simply indulging your sweet tooth.

Ingredients:

  • For the Cake:
    • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour  
    • 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
    • ¾ cup (75g) unsweetened cocoa powder (preferably Dutch-processed)
    • 1½ teaspoons baking powder
    • 1½ teaspoons baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk
    • ½ cup (120ml) vegetable oil  
    • 2 large eggs
    • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
    • 1 cup (240ml) hot coffee
  • For the Chocolate Frosting (Optional, but recommended):
    • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
    • 3 cups (360g) powdered sugar
    • ½ cup (50g) unsweetened cocoa powder
    • ¼ cup (60ml) milk or heavy cream
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Pans: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line with parchment paper.  
  2. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract.  
  4. Mix Batter: Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix on medium speed until well combined.
  5. Add Coffee: Gradually pour in the hot coffee while mixing on low speed until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thin.
  6. Bake: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30−35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.  
  7. Cool: Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Prepare Frosting (Optional):
    • In a large bowl, cream the softened butter until smooth.
    • Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing on low speed until combined.
    • Add the milk or heavy cream and vanilla extract, and mix on medium speed until smooth and creamy.
  9. Frost the Cake: Once the cakes are completely cooled, frost them as desired.
  10. Serve: Slice and enjoy your moist and fluffy chocolate cake!
