Moist & Fluffy Chocolate Cake Recipe

This recipe yields a decadent, moist, and fluffy chocolate cake perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients:

  • Dry Ingredients:
    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 2 cups granulated sugar
    • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (good quality)
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Wet Ingredients:
    • 1 cup buttermilk
    • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
    • 2 large eggs
    • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
    • 1 cup freshly brewed hot coffee

Instructions:

  1. Preheat and Prepare:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line them with parchment paper.
  2. Combine Dry Ingredients:
    • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients:
    • In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  4. Combine Wet and Dry:
    • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix on medium speed until just combined.
    • Add the hot coffe, and mix until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thin.
  5. Bake:
    • Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
    • Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.  
    • Let the pans cool for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  6. Frost:
    • Once the cakes are completely cool, frost with your favorite chocolate frosting.

Notes:

  • Using good quality cocoa powder will greatly enhance the flavor of your cake.
  • The hot coffee helps to intensify the chocolate flavor and keeps the cake moist.
  • Buttermilk also adds moisture and a slight tang that compliments the chocolate.
  • Do not overmix the batter once the wet and dry ingredients are combined, as this can result in a tough cake.
  • Let the cake cool completely before frosting to prevent the frosting from melting.
