Long John Silver’s Batter

INGREDENT

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika (optional)
  • 1/2 cup cold water (plus more as needed for consistency)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and optional spices like onion powder and paprika.
  2. Add the beaten egg and cold water to the dry ingredients.
  3. Stir until a smooth batter forms. It should be slightly thick but pourable. Add a little extra water if needed.
  4. Heat oil in a deep fryer or deep skillet to 350–375°F (175–190°C).
  5. Dip fish fillets, chicken, or vegetables into the batter, allowing the excess to drip off.
  6. Carefully place into hot oil and fry until golden brown and crispy (about 3–5 minutes depending on the size).
  7. Remove and drain on paper towels. Serve hot with tartar sauce or malt vinegar.
