It was founded in 1919 by a group that included the Presbyterian Mission Church and the Church Mission Society. The institution relocated to its present location on Jail Road in 1926 and expanded there throughout the years, eventually filling an area of 20 acres (81,000 square meters) by 1939.
Lady Marie Jane Kinnaird, a famous philanthropist of her day and co-founder of the YWCA, is honored with a college bearing her name. In the early 20th century, when it was situated close to Kinnaird High School, the university was firmly founded. In 2002, the government designated the college as a degree-granting school, and operations were transferred to the Association of Kinnaird Colleges.
