Ingredients
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups chicken broth (preferably low sodium)
- 1 beef bouillon cube (or 1 tsp beef bouillon granules)
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Make a Roux – In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the flour and stir constantly for 4–5 minutes until it turns a golden brown color. This gives the gravy its signature KFC-like flavor.
- Add Broth – Slowly pour in the chicken broth, whisking continuously to prevent lumps.
- Add Bouillon & Seasonings – Stir in the beef bouillon, onion powder, and garlic powder. Keep whisking until fully dissolved.
- Simmer – Reduce heat and simmer for 3–4 minutes, stirring often, until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
- Taste & Adjust – Add salt and pepper if needed. Serve hot over mashed potatoes, fried chicken, or biscuits.
đź’ˇ Tip: The real KFC gravy has a rich, slightly smoky flavor. You can mimic this by letting your roux get just a shade darker before adding the broth.
If you like, I can also give you a KFC-style “drippings gravy” version that’s even closer to their kitchen method. Would you like me to prepare that?
