These homemade KFC-style biscuits are flaky, buttery, and perfect as a side dish or for making biscuit sandwiches. They have a light, airy texture and are great for soaking up gravy or served with honey.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
- 3/4 cup buttermilk (or milk with 1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar added)
- 2 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
- Cut in Butter: Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter, fork, or your fingers, cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add Buttermilk: Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the buttermilk. Stir until just combined. The dough should be slightly sticky.
- Shape Biscuits: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it comes together. Pat the dough out to about 1-inch thickness. Use a biscuit cutter or a round glass to cut out biscuits. Gather and reroll the scraps to cut out more biscuits.
- Bake: Place the biscuits onto the prepared baking sheet, close together for soft sides or spaced apart for crispier edges. Brush the tops with melted butter.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown on top.
- Serve: Brush with additional melted butter, if desired, and serve warm.
