Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese (or a mix of cheeses)
- 1 ½ cups milk
- 1 egg
- 3 tbsp melted butter (plus extra for brushing)
- 1 tsp garlic powder (optional, for extra flavor)
- 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley or chives (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and flour a loaf pan or line with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder.
- Stir in shredded cheese, making sure it’s coated in flour (this helps prevent sinking).
- In a separate bowl, whisk milk, egg, and melted butter until well combined.
- Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and mix until just combined — do not overmix.
- Fold in garlic powder and herbs if using.
- Transfer batter into prepared loaf pan. Smooth the top and sprinkle a little extra cheese.
- Bake for 40–45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Brush with a little melted butter after baking for extra softness.
- Let cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm for breakfast with butter or jam.
