Ingredients
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
- ¼ cup warm water (110°F)
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp olive oil (or vegetable oil)
- ¾ cup warm milk
- 1 egg (for egg wash, optional)
Instructions
- Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: Pour the activated yeast mixture, warm milk, and olive oil into the well of the dry ingredients. Stir to combine, and then knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. You can do this by hand or with a stand mixer.
- First Rise: Cover the dough with a damp cloth or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm area for 1-1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
- Shape the Buns: Punch down the dough to release air bubbles. Divide it into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a smooth ball, then gently roll it into an elongated shape, about 4-5 inches long, to form the hot dog buns.
- Second Rise: Place the shaped buns on a greased baking sheet, leaving some space between them. Cover with a cloth and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat the Oven: While the buns are rising, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Optional Egg Wash: If you’d like a shiny golden crust, beat the egg and brush it over the tops of the buns.
- Bake: Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
- Cool: Remove the buns from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack before serving.
Enjoy your homemade hot dog buns!
