Description
This homemade sweet chili sauce is a perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and tangy flavors. Made with fresh chilies, garlic, and simple pantry ingredients, it’s healthier and more flavorful than store-bought versions. Use it as a dipping sauce, glaze, or drizzle for your favorite dishes.
Ingredients
- 8–10 fresh red chilies (adjust to taste)
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup white sugar (or brown sugar)
- 1/2 cup rice vinegar (or white vinegar)
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons water (for slurry)
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Wash the chilies and remove stems. Chop them roughly.
- In a blender, blend chilies, garlic, and 1/2 cup water until smooth.
- Pour the mixture into a saucepan over medium heat.
- Add sugar, vinegar, salt, and soy sauce (if using). Stir well.
- Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 8–10 minutes.
- In a small bowl, mix cornstarch with 2 tablespoons water.
- Slowly add the slurry to the sauce while stirring.
- Cook for another 2–3 minutes until thick and glossy.
- Remove from heat and let it cool. The sauce will thicken more as it cools.
- Transfer to a clean jar or bottle and store in the refrigerator.
Tips
- For less heat, remove chili seeds before blending.
- For extra flavor, add 1 teaspoon grated ginger.
- Adjust sweetness by reducing or increasing sugar.
- Store in an airtight jar for up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator.
- Use as a dip for spring rolls, chicken wings, nuggets, or fries.
- Brush on grilled meats or vegetables for a sweet-spicy glaze.
