Homemade donuts recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup melted unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • Oil for frying

For the glaze:

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast:
In a bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and a pinch of sugar. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix the dough:
In a large bowl, combine sugar, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla. Add yeast mixture and stir. Gradually add flour and salt, mixing until a dough forms.
  3. Knead & rise:
Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1-2 hours until doubled.
  4. Shape the donuts:
Roll out dough to 1/2-inch thickness. Use a donut cutter (or two round cutters) to cut out donuts and holes. Place on a parchment-lined tray, cover, and let rise again for 30-45 minutes.
  5. Fry to perfection:
Heat oil to 350°F (175°C). Fry donuts in batches, about 1 minute per side, until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
  6. Glaze them:
Whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla for the glaze. Dip warm donuts in the glaze, then let set on a rack.

Would you like to add fillings, a chocolate glaze, or maybe a fun topping like sprinkles or cinnamon sugar?
