Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons (60 ml) olive oil
- 1 tablespoon (10 g) dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/3 cups (320 ml) warm water
- 4 3/4 cups (570 g) plain flour
Instructions
- Prepare the yeast: In a bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and a pinch of sugar (optional, to help activate the yeast). Stir well and let it sit for about 5–10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Mix the dough: In a large mixing bowl, add the flour and salt. Create a well in the center, and pour in the activated yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until the dough begins to come together.
- Knead the dough: Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8–10 minutes, or until the dough becomes smooth and elastic. You can also use a stand mixer with a dough hook for this step.
- Let it rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm area for 1-2 hours or until it doubles in size.
- Shape the bread: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and transfer it to a greased loaf pan or shape it into a round or oval loaf on a baking sheet.
- Second rise: Let the dough rise again for about 30-45 minutes, covering it loosely.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Cool: Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing.
