Savory hamburger steaks smothered in a rich, caramelized onion gravy. A classic comfort food dish perfect for a family dinner.

Ingredients:

  • For the Hamburger Steaks:
    • 1.5 lbs ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
    • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 large egg
    • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
    • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or olive oil)
  • For the Onion Gravy:
    • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
    • 2 tablespoons butter
    • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 2 cups beef broth
    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
    • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
    • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Hamburger Steaks:
    • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon dried thyme, salt, and pepper.
    • Mix gently with your hands until well combined.
    • Form the mixture into patties, about 1/2-inch thick.
    • Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Cook the hamburger steaks for 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the steaks from the skillet and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Onion Gravy:
    • In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
    • Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized and golden brown (about 15-20 minutes).
    • Sprinkle the flour over the onions and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until the flour is lightly browned.
    • Gradually pour in the beef broth, stirring continuously to prevent lumps.
    • Add the 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, and the 1/2 teaspoon of thyme.
    • Bring the gravy to a simmer and cook until thickened, about 5-10 minutes.
    • Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Combine and Serve:
    • Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet with the onion gravy.
    • Simmer for a few minutes to allow the steaks to heat through and absorb the flavors of the gravy.
    • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite side dishes.
