- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or olive oil)
- For the Onion Gravy:
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Prepare the Hamburger Steaks:
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon dried thyme, salt, and pepper.
- Mix gently with your hands until well combined.
- Form the mixture into patties, about 1/2-inch thick.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Cook the hamburger steaks for 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the steaks from the skillet and set aside.
- Prepare the Onion Gravy:
- In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized and golden brown (about 15-20 minutes).
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until the flour is lightly browned.
- Gradually pour in the beef broth, stirring continuously to prevent lumps.
- Add the 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, and the 1/2 teaspoon of thyme.
- Bring the gravy to a simmer and cook until thickened, about 5-10 minutes.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Combine and Serve:
- Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet with the onion gravy.
- Simmer for a few minutes to allow the steaks to heat through and absorb the flavors of the gravy.
- Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite side dishes.
