Ingredients
For the Ground Beef & Gravy:
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp salt (adjust to taste)
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp paprika (optional)
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
For the Mashed Potatoes:
- 2 lbs (900g) potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 4 tbsp butter
- ½ cup milk (warm)
- Salt & pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Mashed Potatoes
- Place the potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water, and add a pinch of salt.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until potatoes are fork-tender (about 15 minutes).
- Drain, then mash with butter, warm milk, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy. Set aside.
- Cook the Ground Beef & Gravy
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Remove excess grease if needed.
- Add chopped onions and cook until softened, about 3–4 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
- Push the beef mixture to one side of the skillet, melt butter on the empty side, then whisk in flour to form a paste (roux).
- Gradually whisk in beef broth, mixing it into the beef. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and paprika (if using).
- Simmer for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gravy thickens.
- Serve
- Spoon creamy mashed potatoes onto plates, top with ground beef & gravy, and sprinkle with fresh parsley.
If you want, I can also give you a richer, diner-style version with creamy gravy and a hint of herbs. That would make it taste like a comfort food classic.
