Ground Beef & Gravy with Mashed Potatoes

Ingredients

For the Ground Beef & Gravy:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp salt (adjust to taste)
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp paprika (optional)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 2 lbs (900g) potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup milk (warm)
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Mashed Potatoes
    • Place the potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water, and add a pinch of salt.
    • Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until potatoes are fork-tender (about 15 minutes).
    • Drain, then mash with butter, warm milk, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy. Set aside.
  2. Cook the Ground Beef & Gravy
    • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Remove excess grease if needed.
    • Add chopped onions and cook until softened, about 3–4 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
    • Push the beef mixture to one side of the skillet, melt butter on the empty side, then whisk in flour to form a paste (roux).
    • Gradually whisk in beef broth, mixing it into the beef. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and paprika (if using).
    • Simmer for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gravy thickens.
  3. Serve
    • Spoon creamy mashed potatoes onto plates, top with ground beef & gravy, and sprinkle with fresh parsley.

If you want, I can also give you a richer, diner-style version with creamy gravy and a hint of herbs. That would make it taste like a comfort food classic.
