Ground Beef and Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes

INGREDIENT

For the Ground Beef and Gravy:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp soy sauce (optional, for extra umami)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp butter (optional, for richness)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 2 lbs potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet), peeled and cubed
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup milk or heavy cream (more as needed)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

INSTRUCTION

  1. Prepare the Mashed Potatoes:
    • Place potatoes in a large pot and cover with water. Add salt.
    • Bring to a boil and cook until potatoes are fork-tender, about 15–20 minutes.
    • Drain and return to the pot.
    • Add butter and milk; mash until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cover to keep warm.
  2. Cook the Ground Beef and Gravy:
    • In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until fully cooked. Drain excess grease if needed.
    • Add the chopped onion and cook until soft, about 4–5 minutes.
    • Stir in garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
    • Sprinkle flour over the beef mixture and stir well, cooking for 1–2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.
    • Slowly whisk in the beef broth, then add Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce if using.
    • Bring to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, about 5–7 minutes.
    • Stir in butter at the end for a silkier gravy, and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
  3. Serve:
    • Spoon the mashed potatoes onto plates.
    • Top generously with the ground beef and gravy mixture.
    • Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.
