For the Ground Beef and Gravy:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp soy sauce (optional, for extra umami)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 tbsp butter (optional, for richness)
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
For the Mashed Potatoes:
- 2 lbs potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet), peeled and cubed
- 4 tbsp butter
- 1/2 cup milk or heavy cream (more as needed)
- Salt and pepper to taste
INSTRUCTION
- Prepare the Mashed Potatoes:
- Place potatoes in a large pot and cover with water. Add salt.
- Bring to a boil and cook until potatoes are fork-tender, about 15–20 minutes.
- Drain and return to the pot.
- Add butter and milk; mash until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cover to keep warm.
- Cook the Ground Beef and Gravy:
- In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until fully cooked. Drain excess grease if needed.
- Add the chopped onion and cook until soft, about 4–5 minutes.
- Stir in garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
- Sprinkle flour over the beef mixture and stir well, cooking for 1–2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.
- Slowly whisk in the beef broth, then add Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce if using.
- Bring to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, about 5–7 minutes.
- Stir in butter at the end for a silkier gravy, and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
- Serve:
- Spoon the mashed potatoes onto plates.
- Top generously with the ground beef and gravy mixture.
- Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.
