Grandma’s Old-Fashioned Bread Pudding

Ingredients

  • 6 cups day-old bread, cubed (French bread or white bread works well)
  • 4 cups milk (warm)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup sugar (white or brown)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
  • ½ cup raisins (optional)
  • 2 tbsp butter (melted)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Place bread cubes in the dish. If using raisins, sprinkle them evenly over the bread.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and melted butter until smooth.
  4. Pour the mixture evenly over the bread, pressing lightly so all bread absorbs the liquid.
  5. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes to soak.
  6. Bake uncovered for 45–50 minutes, or until golden brown and set in the center.
  7. Serve warm, plain or with a drizzle of vanilla sauce, caramel, or whipped cream.
