Ingredients
- 6 cups day-old bread, cubed (French bread or white bread works well)
- 4 cups milk (warm)
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup sugar (white or brown)
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
- ½ cup raisins (optional)
- 2 tbsp butter (melted)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Place bread cubes in the dish. If using raisins, sprinkle them evenly over the bread.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and melted butter until smooth.
- Pour the mixture evenly over the bread, pressing lightly so all bread absorbs the liquid.
- Let it sit for 10–15 minutes to soak.
- Bake uncovered for 45–50 minutes, or until golden brown and set in the center.
- Serve warm, plain or with a drizzle of vanilla sauce, caramel, or whipped cream.
