Golden Crusted Ham and Cheese Bake

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf of soft sandwich bread (about 12 slices)
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or Swiss, or a mix)
  • 8 oz sliced cooked ham
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prep the Pan: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Layer the Sandwiches: Lay half the bread slices in the dish to cover the bottom. Layer with half the ham and half the cheese. Top with the remaining bread, ham, and cheese.
  3. Make the Custard: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, Dijon mustard (if using), garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  4. Pour & Soak: Slowly pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread layers. Press down gently with a spatula so the bread absorbs the liquid. Let sit for about 10 minutes to soak.
  5. Top & Bake: Brush the tops with melted butter for a golden crust. Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes or until puffed and golden brown, and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Finish & Serve: Remove from the oven and let rest for 5–10 minutes. Sprinkle with chopped parsley if desired. Slice and serve warm!

If you’d like, I can help you adapt this with other fillings — like bacon, veggies, or different cheeses. Just say the word!
