Ingredients
- 1 loaf of soft sandwich bread (about 12 slices)
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or Swiss, or a mix)
- 8 oz sliced cooked ham
- 4 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard (optional)
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Prep the Pan: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Layer the Sandwiches: Lay half the bread slices in the dish to cover the bottom. Layer with half the ham and half the cheese. Top with the remaining bread, ham, and cheese.
- Make the Custard: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, Dijon mustard (if using), garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper until well combined.
- Pour & Soak: Slowly pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread layers. Press down gently with a spatula so the bread absorbs the liquid. Let sit for about 10 minutes to soak.
- Top & Bake: Brush the tops with melted butter for a golden crust. Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes or until puffed and golden brown, and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Finish & Serve: Remove from the oven and let rest for 5–10 minutes. Sprinkle with chopped parsley if desired. Slice and serve warm!
