Fried Green Tomatoes Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 large green tomatoes, sliced about 1/4 inch thick
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour  
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Vegetable oil, for frying  

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Tomatoes:
    • Slice green tomatoes into 1/4-inch thick rounds.
    • Season the tomato slices with salt and pepper.
  2. Create the Breading Station:
    • In one shallow dish, combine flour, salt, and pepper.
    • In another shallow dish, whisk together buttermilk.
    • In a third shallow dish, combine cornmeal, paprika, and cayenne pepper.
  3. Bread the Tomatoes:
    • Dredge each tomato slice in the flour mixture, then dip into the buttermilk, and finally coat with the cornmeal mixture.  
  4. Fry the Tomatoes:
    • Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).  
    • Carefully add the breaded tomato slices to the hot oil, working in batches to avoid overcrowding.  
    • Fry until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  5. Drain and Serve:
    • Remove the fried green tomatoes from the oil and drain on paper towels.  
    • Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ranch dressing or marinara sauce.
