Fried Cabbage with Shrimp & Sausage (Shrimp Optional)

Ingredients

  • 1 medium head of cabbage, chopped
  • 1 lb smoked sausage, sliced
  • 1 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined (optional)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth (or water)
  • Red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients:
    • Slice the smoked sausage and chop the cabbage into bite-sized pieces.
    • Peel and devein the shrimp if using.
    • Dice the onion and mince the garlic.
  2. Cook the Sausage:
    • In a large skillet or frying pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
    • Add the sliced sausage and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from the pan and set aside.
  3. Sauté Onion & Garlic:
    • In the same skillet, add the butter and allow it to melt.
    • Add the diced onion and minced garlic. Sauté until softened and fragrant, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Cook the Cabbage:
    • Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet, stirring well.
    • Sprinkle with paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Pour in the chicken broth (or water) and cover the skillet. Let it cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage softens.
  5. Add Shrimp (Optional):
    • If using shrimp, add the shrimp to the pan in the last 3-4 minutes of cooking, stirring occasionally until the shrimp turns pink and is cooked through.
  6. Combine:
    • Return the cooked sausage to the skillet and stir everything together.
    • If you like extra heat, sprinkle some red pepper flakes over the top.
  7. Serve:
    • Garnish with freshly chopped parsley and serve hot.
