Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Onion, and Garlic Recipe

This simple and flavorful side dish features tender cabbage cooked with crispy bacon, caramelized onions, and fragrant garlic. It’s a comforting and satisfying dish that pairs well with many main courses.

Ingredients:

  • 6 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium head of cabbage (about 2 pounds), shredded or chopped
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth (or vegetable broth)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (or brown sugar)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Bacon: In a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat, cook the chopped bacon until crispy. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside, leaving the bacon grease in the skillet.
  2. Sauté Onion and Garlic: Add the chopped onion to the skillet with the bacon grease and cook until softened and lightly browned, about 5-7 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Add Cabbage: Add the shredded or chopped cabbage to the skillet and toss to combine with the onion and garlic.
  4. Add Broth and Seasoning: Pour in the chicken broth (or vegetable broth), apple cider vinegar, and sugar (or brown sugar). Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Cook the Cabbage: Cover the skillet and cook over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender-crisp, about 10-15 minutes.
  6. Add Bacon: Return the cooked bacon to the skillet and stir to combine.
  7. Serve: Garnish with chopped fresh parsley and serve hot.

Tips and Variations:

  • Cabbage Variety: You can use green cabbage, red cabbage, or Savoy cabbage for this recipe.
  • Spice it Up: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce for a spicy kick.
  • Herbs: Experiment with different herbs like thyme, rosemary, or caraway seeds.
  • Vegetables: Add other vegetables like carrots, bell peppers, or mushrooms to the skillet.
  • Apple: Add a diced apple to the skillet for a sweet and savory flavor.
  • Balsamic Vinegar: Use balsamic vinegar instead of apple cider vinegar for a richer flavor.
  • Make it Vegetarian: Omit the bacon and use olive oil instead of bacon grease.
