Bloom the yeast: In a large bowl, whisk together the warm milk, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of the sugar. Let stand for 5 minutes, or until the mixture is foamy.
Combine ingredients: Stir in the remaining sugar, salt, melted butter, and egg. Gradually add the flour, 1 cup at a time, stirring until a dough forms.
Knead the dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
First rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Shape the rolls: Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place them in a greased baking sheet.
Second rise: Cover the rolls with a clean kitchen towel and let rise for another 30 minutes.
Bake: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
Cool and serve: Remove the rolls from the oven and brush with melted butter. Let cool slightly before serving.
