Ingredients:
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon milk
Instructions:
- Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine yeast, sugar, and warm water. Let stand for 5-10 minutes, or until foamy.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt.
- Add Wet Ingredients: Make a well in the center of the flour mixture. Pour in the activated yeast mixture, melted butter, egg, and milk.
- Mix Dough: Stir with a wooden spoon until a dough forms.
- Knead Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
- First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 1-1 1/2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Shape Rolls: Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball.
- Second Rise: Place the rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let rise for another 30 minutes.
- Bake: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Cool: Let the rolls cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.
Tips:
- For extra flavor, add 1 tablespoon of finely chopped fresh herbs (such as rosemary or thyme) to the dough.
- To make dinner rolls, brush the tops of the rolls with melted butter before baking.
- For a sweeter roll, add 1-2 tablespoons of sugar to the dough.
