- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 ¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- ½ tsp salt
- ¾ cup warm milk (110°F)
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- 1 cup filling of choice (custard, jam, Nutella, or pastry cream)
- Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a small bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and a teaspoon of sugar. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, remaining sugar, and salt.
- Add yeast mixture, butter, egg, and vanilla. Mix until combined, then knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth.
- Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, until doubled in size.
- Shape the Doughnuts:
- Roll out dough to about ½-inch thickness. Cut into circles using a round cutter.
- Place on a parchment-lined tray, cover, and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- Fry the Doughnuts:
- Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry doughnuts in batches for 1-2 minutes per side until golden brown.
- Drain on paper towels and let cool slightly.
- Fill and Serve:
- Use a piping bag with a small tip to fill each doughnut with your desired filling.
- Dust with powdered sugar if desired.
